Going to Africa!

Tomorrow evening I'm scheduled to fly out of JFK. ??We'll see how that goes. ??And then I'll be in Africa.

It's a three week safari in Southern Africa (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia). ??I'm looking forward to escaping the snow and getting some rest and relaxation in the warm southern hemisphere.

Because we're mostly staying in national parks, I doubt I'll have much access to emails or phones. ??So please be patient. ??I'll get back to you all when I get back.

I hope you'll enjoy some vacation time yourself over the holidays. ??And I'll see you all when I get back.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! ??

January and February Serving Opportunities

St. Paul’s will be serving at the MACC Soup Kitchen on Monday, 1/10/11 and Monday 2/14/11.  We are looking for volunteers (5 per evening) to serve on those evenings.  This is a perfect opportunity for those who haven’t volunteered before to take this next step with small group friends or family.  The committment is from 7:00 – 9:00 PM.  Please sign up on the sheet in the lobby at church as soon as possible so that we can confirm our committment to these serving opportunities.

Thanks for serving,

Bob Jeram.

Christmas Eve Offering

As we’ve done in the past, we’ll be receiving a Christmas Eve offering to support missions.  Last year we gave the offering to CareNet, a crisis pregnancy group.  This year we will also support CareNet as well as ICF (International Christian Fellowship), a group that reaches out to the international community at UConn from the offering.

In this Christmas season we celebrate that God is a giver.  And so are his people.  That’s why, in the spirit of Christmas, we are receiving an offering, not for ourselves, but for others.

Gathering for Panama Kids

This Sunday, 12/10/10, we will be gathering donations for Christmas/New Year’s gifts for children associated with the churches that we work with in San Miguelito, Panama.  Our goal is to give a gift bag, valued at $25 each, to 100 kids.  These bags will be purchased and distributed when our Mission Team is in Panama the second week of January.  What we are asking for this Sunday, is that you sponsor one or more of these gift bags.  There will be an opportunity during the service for you to send a short note to the churches that we are working with lending your support and encouragement to them as we work together to transform these areas of San Miguelito.

Why You Don’t Want to Miss the Next Second Sunday Supper

A Post by Emily Dolan

There is something about food that brings people together. Looking back, some of my best conversations have been had over coffee and some of my closest relationships have been built over dinner.

Our Second Sunday Supper in November was a much-needed reminder of the relational power of food and the spiritual power of relationships. Thanks to the hard work and culinary skills of Brad and Cathy Wright, Ed and Julie Cyzewski, Brandon and Judy Hawk, Jeff and Emma Liddle, Ishmael and Larisa Smyrnow, Chris and Amy Hale-Smith, Todd Robinson, Zara Rix, and Jen Brown, the upstairs room was transformed into a dinner buffet where there was standing-room-only as people chatted and lingered over food and coffee.

With two different services and so many tasks that need to get done before, during, and after each service, I rarely get the opportunity to sit and talk with people. And the more the tasks pile up, the more I begin to wonder, ???Why do we even bother? What is all this work really for???? Being surrounded by so many people talking, laughing, and genuinely enjoying each other???s company reminded me why church matters and what church is really meant to be: a group of people who love God and love each other.

So because church is about community and community is about building relationships, I hope the Second Sunday Supper becomes a regular tradition at St. Paul???s that we all take part in and all look forward to.??

If you enjoyed it as much as I did and are interested in helping with set-up/clean-up for our next Second Sunday Supper (January 9th), please e-mail me at egdolan (at) gmail (dot) com and let me know.
