Fight: Need vs. TraditionPosted: February 7, 2013
Jesus turned water to wine. By doing so he broke an important religious tradition: ritual washing.
Jesus regularly healed on the Sabbath. By doing so he broke an important religious tradition: Sabbath keeping.
Jesus regularly feasted and celebrated. By doing so he failed to observe an important religious tradition: fasting.
Jesus broke a lot of religious traditions. And the reason is simple. Jesus believed religious traditions were created to meet human needs. So if human needs and religious traditions are in conflict Jesus goes with human need every time.
The wedding needed wine. People needed healing. And when the lost are found it’s time for celebrating not fasting.
Religious traditions are important. But when they conflict with real human needs Jesus broke them every day of the week and twice on Sunday. So should we.
