Chappelle, Peter, and YouPosted: September 3, 2013
To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed. 1 Peter 5:1
Last week comedian Dave Chappelle bombed in Hartford. He was booed off the stage. It wasn’t that his material bombed. It was that Dave quit doing his material altogether because of a few hecklers in the crowd. Dave’s attitude seemed eerily similar to his famous Rick James impersonation: “I’m Rick James, B%&#*!
In Sunday’s message we heard the apostle Peter instruct a group of Christians he had never met. Peter addresses these folks as a fellow elder. Notice Peter does not say…
“I’m Peter, the guy who walked on water with Jesus.”
“I’m Peter, the guy who first realized Jesus is the Christ.”
“I’m Peter, the guy who converted three thousand in a single sermon.”
He says,” I’m Peter, a fellow elder like you.” Peter models the humility he teaches. Peter practices what he preaches. He did not let his fame, notoriety and past accomplishments get to his head.
And how about you? Are you more like Dave with his “I don’t have to put up with this” attitude or are you more like Pete with his “I’m just like you” attitude?
