Joshua 9

Like Gibeon, we are to commit to the Lord–any motivation (even self-preservation) will do.  Like Israel, we are to keep our commitments to one another (even foolish ones).  Why?  Covenants are important.  In covenant we make an unconditional commitment to another with conditional blessings for obedience.  We are blessed by God for our faithfulness even when the other party is unfaithful.
